The Nâreke is one of the oldest and most distinctive instruments used in Turkish shadow theatre. At the beginning of every Karagöz performance, the puppeteer—known as the Hayali—uses this simple bamboo whistle to signal that the show is about to begin. Its sound imitates various animals and playful tones, setting the mood before the characters appear on screen.
